At a distance of 3.5 km, west of the village of Kato Asites and at an altitude of 670 m., Is the historic cave “Melissa”. Its value is, apart from speleological, historical and archaeological. Entering the cave of Melissa we meet the main hall, which branches to the south and west leading in 2 directions with wonderful and varied stone decoration.
During the Turkish occupation, when the area was looted by the Ottomans, about 200 women and children found refuge there in September 1868. The Ottomans tried to find the women and children but failed as the cave is in an inaccessible area and very difficult to locate. In the area of Kato Asites there are also the following well-known caves:
